Plan A and Plan B
Director of Graduate Studies: Associate Professor Alec Habig
Contact Information—Department of Physics, University of Minnesota Duluth,

The master of science program provides a grounding in the
fundamentals of physics, combined with significant research
involvement. The primary areas of research are computational
physics, high-energy neutrino physics, experimental work
in condensed-matter physics, and observational and theoretical
work in physical limnology. |
Prerequisites
for Admission | | An
undergraduate degree in physics or the equivalent is required.
Special Application Requirements
Three letters of recommendation are required for assistantship support.
For more information about Graduate School admissions, visit the Graduate School Web site. | M.S.
Degree Requirements | | The
master of science degree is offered under both Plan A and Plan
B. All students take 11 credits in a common core of courses (including
PHYS 5501, 5511, 5521; and 2 credits in 5090), 3 credits in a
methods course (PHYS 5052 or 5053 or 5061), and 6 credits in
a minor or related field. Plan A also requires 10 thesis credits.
Plan B requires one or more projects for a total of 120 hours
of work, preparation of a written report for each project, and
10 additional course credits in physics. These courses may include
4xxx courses if appropriate and if approved for graduate credit;
for distinctly interdisciplinary programs, the courses may be
outside physics. In all cases, the overall plan of study and
selection of elective courses must form a coherent program and
be approved by the director of graduate studies.
Language Requirements—None.
Final Exam—The final exam is oral.
Minor Requirements for Students Majoring in Other Fields—A master’s
minor requires 6 credits, of which no more than 1 credit can be from PHYS 5090.
