On the cover: The replica shown is one of the first building blocks of the Virtual Dental Patient, a computer image of a human patient that can be examined in a similar way. The replica is a three-dimensional, gray-scaled rendition of 600,000 data points. The latest innovations can render 1.5 million data points giving full tissue textural detail. The replica can be fully interrogated to give such important clinical parameters as wear rates, tissue details, and dental arch and tooth dimensions. It can also "see" into undercuts and interdental spaces.

This software was developed at the School of Dentistry by Mark Quadling through National Institute for Dental Research (NIDR) support. Dr. Ralph DeLong is the principal investigator and Dr. William H. Douglas is the coprincipal investigator. The work continues with NIDR support to bring the upper and lower jaw images together and develop physiologic animation.
